Our Milky Way
Now Playing: It has a hugh black hole in the center (brightest area)

Size and Shape of the Milky Way

The Milky Way is a large galaxy comprising an estimated 200 billion stars (some estimates range as high as 400 billion) arrayed in the form of a disk, with a central elliptical bulge (some 12,000 light-years in diameter) of closely packed stars lying in the direction of Sagittarius.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milky_way_galaxy

It is surrounded by a flat disk marked by six spiral arms—four major and two minor—which wind out from the nucleus like a giant pinwheel. Because of these arms, the Milky Way was classified as a spiral galaxy. However, increasing evidence indicates that the Milky Way probably has a bar or barlike structure of new, bright stars in its central region.

This would modify its classification to a barred spiral or an intermediate type between barred and “normal” spiral. Our sun is situated in one of the smaller arms, called the Local or Orion Arm, that connect the more substantial next inner arm and the next outer arm. The sun lies roughly two thirds of the way from the center of the disk, which is some 28,000 light-years distant, and in the galactic plane.

When we look in the plane of the disk we see the combined light of its stars as the Milky Way. The diameter of the disk is c.100,000 light-years; its average thickness is 10,000 light-years, increasing to 30,000 light-years at the nucleus.

Black Holes: http://journals.aol.com/philcutrara1/Our-Milky-Way/

A black hole "shines" with Hawking radiation. The escaping member of a virtual particle pair carried away energy from the black hole, and the black hole loses mass as a result. Eventually the black hole loses all its energy, or equivalently mass, and evaporates.

Vitamin B-3

Vascular Cleanse

4th Day Niacin Flush on Skin

Obtain Ultimate Cardiovascular Health With Vascular Cleanse!

Daniel Chapter One views a healthy cardiovascular system as optimal to health.

What is Vascular Cleanse?

Vascular Cleanse is Vitamin B-3 (niacin) with Vitamin C combined in our proprietary base.

Why Vascular Cleanse?

When lipids - fats and cholesterols - build up in the blood vessels, there is an increased chance of disease. A build-up of lipids can lead to a variety of illnesses i.e. diabetes, hypertension (high blood pressure), arteriosclerosis, acidosis, ketosis, fatty liver disease and capillary blockage. These may lead to further problems for your vascular system such as stroke, arrhythmias, heart attack and even death.

The desired goals of Vascular Cleanse

The desired goal of Vascular Cleanse is to remove the fats from the vascular system, especially those that have accumulated in the tiny capillaries throughout the body. Blocked capillaries impede cardiovascular health and jeopardize heart health.

How does Vascular Cleanse Work?

Vascular Cleanse allows for the oxidation (burning) of lipids, fats, triglycerides and cholesterol. As a result you may initially experience some symptoms.

The oxidation of lipids by Vascular Cleanse produces heat and energy, a process known as thermogenesis. This chemical reaction may cause the skin to turn red, even blotchy in appearance. This is normal as the capillaries in the skin dilate, expand, so that the heat created from the burning of these fats can be released into the air.

Some individuals may also experience itching as well. This is also a normal response that is short lived and may never occur again. This response is simply due to the normal nerve sensations and from enhanced circulation.

How should Vascular Cleanse be taken?

Take 1 Vascular Cleanse Capsule daily until the flush (desired reaction) ceases. Then continue daily for one week. If there is a large accumulation of lipids in your vascular system the flush may still continue after one week. If this is so then you should continue until the flush no longer occurs. At this time you may increase the daily intake to 2 capsules and follow the same procedures as you did while taking one or go to maintenance levels. It is important to know how you are responding to the Vascular cleanse. Many other companies want to sell you products and therefore sell you niacinamide and/or flush-free niacin. This does not allow you to assess your cardiovascular condition. The so-called side effects are really important desired reactions that allow you to assess your vascular condition. Once you have taken Vascular Cleanse for an initial phase you can start a maintenance program that is to your liking. Most individuals will use 1 to 2 Vascular Cleanse capsules per week to prevent future capillary lipid blockage.

Health Conditions

What health conditions require special emphasis on vitamin B3?

Vitamin B3 may play a role in the prevention and/or treatment of the following health conditions:
  • Alzhiemer's disease and age-related cognitive decline (August 23, 2004)
  • Cataracts
  • Convulsions
  • Depression
  • Diabetes
  • Gout
  • Hallucinations
  • Headaches
  • HIV/AIDS
  • Hyperactivity
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Inflammatory bowel disease
  • Insomnia
  • Intermittent claudication
  • Menstrual pain
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Pellagra
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Smelling disorders
  • Taste disorders
  • Vertigo

Niacin Protects against Alzheimer's Disease and Age-related Cognitive Decline

Niacin (vitamin B3) is already known to lower cholesterol. Now, research published in the August 2004 issue of the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry indicates regular consumption of niacin-rich foods also provides protection against Alzheimer's disease and age-related cognitive decline.

Researchers from the Chicago Health and Aging Project interviewed 3,718 Chicago residents aged 65 or older about their diet, then tested their cognitive abilities over the following six years.

Those getting the most niacin from foods (22 mg per day) were 70% less likely to have developed Alzheimer's disease than those consuming the least (about 13 mg daily), and their rate of age-related cognitive decline was significantly less. In addition to eating the niacin-rich foods, another way to boost your body's niacin levels is to eat more foods rich in the amino acid tryptophan. Your body can convert tryptophan to niacin, with a little help from other B vitamins, iron and vitamin C. Foods high in tryptophan include shrimp, crimini mushrooms, yellowfin tuna, halibut, chicken breast, scallops, salmon, turkey and tofu. As you can see, several foods rich in tryptophan provide two ways to increase niacin levels as they are also rich in the B vitamin.(august 23, 2004)

Four Secrets to a Flat Stomach
Now Playing: I don't know anyone who doesn't by Jessie Cannone

If your goal is to thin your waistline and have a nice flat stomach, the first thing you need to do is decrease / eliminate the layers of fat that are on top of your abs. The most effective way of flattening your stomach is a combination of strength training (with a extra focus on mid-section), cardiovascular exercise (short, hard workouts), and stable blood sugar (keeps you from adding additional fat and makes it easier for the body to use body fat for fuel).

1. You must do some form of progressive strength training
The primary function of the ab muscle is to flex your torso forward. However, there are also muscles that flex your torso to the side and muscles that rotate your torso. Often times you see people on their ab roller every day doing hundreds of crunches or sit-ups.If you want to effectively strengthen your stomach you need to incorporate the following types of exercises:1-2 forward flexion exercises (crunch, sit-up, etc.)1-2 side flexion exercises (side bends, side crunches, etc.)1-2 rotational exercises (trunk rotations, standing twists, etc.)The abs, are muscles just like any other and should be worked at most 3 times per week.

* You also want to make sure you are training them progressively, working them harder each time.

2. Use short, hard cardio workouts to increase metabolism
Cardio workouts are important because they CAN, if done correctly, increase your metabolism for 4-24 hours or more! This means you are less likely to store any excess calories as body fat because they are more likely to be used by your elevated metabolism. Plus, you are more likely to burn off some excess body fat.Below is a sample interval workout that can be done with just about any activity (walking, bicycling, swimming, stair climbing, etc.).Warm up at easy pace 2-5 minutes then:

* perform 30 seconds of hard work (almost as hard as possible)
* perform 1 minute of moderate work (recovery time-catch breath)
* repeat this process 6-10 times ¿ Cool down at an easy pace for 2-5 minutes

3. Stable blood sugar is the key
And most importantly, you must stabilize your blood sugar! This is by far the most important factor when it comes to burning away that excess body fat and keeping it off! To effectively stabilize your blood sugar you must feed your body frequently; like every 2-3 hours. The key is to give your body only what it needs at that time. Your body burns calories 24 hours a day, so, why would you only feed it once or twice a day? Give your body the fuel it needs: vegetables, fruits, nuts, berries, whole grains, and lean proteins (chicken, fish, lean beef, eggs, etc.).

Many people are too hung up on how much fat is in food, or how healthy of a choice it is. Calories are calories and it doesn't matter where they come from. If there's extra. where's it going? Yup, you guessed it, body fat!

This is not to say that what you eat is not important because it is, it just doesn't have that much of an affect when it comes to fat loss. Try to make healthy choices whenever possible, but don't feel like if you eat a cheeseburger it is guaranteed to be stored as fat.

4. Get the help of a professional
Unfortunately, most people don't know enough about the human body, nutrition, or effective exercise to meet their health and fitness goals. Ask yourself this one question, "Am I happy with my current progress or condition?" If you're not, you should consider getting the help of a qualified personal fitness professional. Don't depend on the information you get from magazines or from your local gym/ health club. A qualified fitness professional can help you achieve your health and fitness goals, and in less time than you would imagine. If you are serious about your health and fitness goals, and you are ready for that flat stomach, I recommend you start implementing the 4 strategies listed in this article. These 4 strategies can help you take control of your metabolism and burn off that excess body fat and having you looking and feeling great!

See: http://menshealth.about.com/cs/fitness/a/flat_stomach_2.htm

Six Things Not To Do!

SIT UPS:

Sit ups, especially when your feet are anchored and you do the exercise rapidly, heavily recruit the hip flexor muscles, making sit ups mediocre at best, and dangerous at worst. The pull on the lumbar spine can aggravate an existing back injury or even create a new one.

AB ROLLERS:

These gizmos are pitched as a safe way to “protect your neck” and improve your form. The irony is that supporting your neck and head ultimately causes the opposite - your neck muscles never get used, so you get weaker and more prone to a painful and debilitating cervical injury.

INFOMERCIAL ABDOMINAL MACHINES:

Every time a new ab contraption comes out, I get bombarded with emails… “This one looks different… What about this one David?” Just Fuggetaboudit! No ab machine has EVER been proven more effective than exercises you can perform with your own body.  Ab machines simply do not work your muscles in a functional manner and they do NOTHING to remove fat from your stomach (THAT is achieved through diet and a small dose of cardio).

ENDLESS REPETITIONS OF FLOOR CRUNCHES:

The crunch is a decent, but totally overused exercise. If crunches are your primary exercise, you’re settling for mediocre results.  Excessive floor crunching can shorten your abdominal wall, pull your head forward and encourage poor posture.  Unless you like the hunchbacked Neanderthal look, you must integrate crunches into a more complete abdominal program.

STARVATION DIETS:

Forget about starvation and crash diets… Flat abs come from proper nutrition as a lifestyle. And remember, nutrition goes hand in hand with exercise like two wheels on a bicycle. If one wheel is flat, the other wheel won’t take you anywhere.  Although FIRM AND FLATTEN YOUR ABS is not a “Diet” it will teach you how to combine exercise with nutrition to get the waistline you’ve only dreamed of before.

FAT BURNING PILLS:

How much money have you flushed down the toilet on these “miracles in a bottle?’  If you’re like most people, your tab is well into the hundreds or thousands of dollars. The entire concept of taking pills to “burn fat” is misguided because pills only treat symptoms – they don’t remove causes. Without lifestyle changes, even the most powerful fat loss drug on the planet can’t help you in the long run…Eventually, you’ll always gain back what you lost, plus interest.

The Heart Healthy Lifestyle Program -- Dean Ornish, MD.
Now Playing: 10% Fatty Foods Improves Your Health

Ornish Lifestyle Program

The Programs from Web Md. http://www.webmd.com/content/pages/9/3068_9408.htm

What It Is

Unlike other diet books that make big promises, Eat More, Weigh Less, by Dean Ornish, MD, soft-pedals the health claims for this diet for the masses, adapted from his regimen to reverse heart disease. Ornish is well known in the medical community because of his success in reversing blockages to the heart, once thought impossible without surgery or drugs. Ornish also runs his own health and diet site here at WebMD which can give you additional details about his plan.

Unlike other books that are full of scientific-sounding theories and explanations without clinical studies to back them up, Ornish's explanations are simple and well supported. His main point is that eating a high-fiber, low-fat vegetarian diet will not only help you stay healthy, or get you there, but also will help you lose weight.

This is accomplished, according to Ornish, by a combination of diet and exercise that allows the body's fat-burning mechanism to work most effectively.

What You Can Eat

Ornish counsels that we will find success not by restricting calories, but by watching the ones we eat. He breaks this down into foods that should be eaten all of the time, some of the time, and none of the time.

The following can be eaten whenever you are hungry, until you are full:

  • Beans and legumes
  • Fruits -- anything from apples to watermelon, from raspberries to pineapples
  • Grains
  • Vegetables

These should be eaten in moderation:

  • Nonfat dairy products -- skim milk, nonfat yogurt, nonfat cheeses, nonfat sour cream, and egg whites
  • Nonfat or very low-fat commercially available products --from Life Choice frozen dinners to Haagen-Dazs frozen yogurt bars and Entenmann's fat-free desserts (but if sugar is among the first few ingredients listed, put it back on the shelf)

These should be avoided:

  • Meat of all kinds -- red and white, fish and fowl (if we can't give up meat, we should at least eat as little as possible)
  • Oils and oil-containing products, such as margarine and most salad dressings
  • Avocados
  • Olives
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Dairy products (other than the nonfat ones above)
  • Sugar and simple sugar derivatives -- honey, molasses, corn syrup, and high-fructose syrup
  • Alcohol
  • Anything commercially prepared that has more than two grams of fat per serving

That's it. If you stick to this plan, you will meet Ornish's recommendation of less than 10% of your calories from fat, without the need to count fat grams or calories. Ornish suggests eating a lot of little meals because this diet makes you feel hungry more often. You will feel full faster, and you'll eat more food without increasing the number of calories.

Ornish's regimen is more than mere diet, he claims. He is a stickler about incorporating at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise a day, or an hour three times a week, and using some kind of stress-management technique, which might include meditation, massage, psychotherapy, or yoga.

===================================================

How It Works

Ornish suggests that our metabolism was set back in Fred Flintstone's era, when we didn't know where our next meal was coming from and there were times when little food was available. The body naturally wanted to hang onto all the energy it could and would try to store any extra energy as fat. Nowadays, most of us have almost continuous access to food, but our bodies haven't adapted to this new way of living.

Because the rate at which you are burning calories can decrease when you consume fewer calories, you may hit a plateau soon after you began a new, lower-calorie diet. For most of us, the pounds seem to melt away for a delightful week or two, but then that scale doesn't budge. Our weight stays the same, sometimes for a week, sometimes much longer.

But Ornish argues that with this eat-all-you-want, eat-as-often-as-you-are-hungry routine, your metabolism stays the same, or better yet, even increases. The high-fiber content also slows down the absorption of food into the digestive system, so you feel full longer with small portions than you would eating calorie-restricted small portions. The complex carbohydrates don't cause your blood sugar, the level of glucose in the blood, to yo-yo. It remains more stable, and so do you.

Ornish gives more than a passing nod to physical activity, encouraging long, slow exercise that uses body fat as fuel. Moderate exercise done on a regular basis revs up your resting metabolism, while some have suggested that short periods of intense exercise decrease metabolism.

Although he doesn't claim that meditation will make the pounds dissolve, his regimen incorporates it as a way of quieting your mind, increasing self-awareness, and coping with stress. He calls it food for the soul. "When your soul is fed, you have less need to overeat," he writes in Eat More, Weigh Less. "When you directly experience the fullness of life, then you have less need to fill the void with food."

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What the Experts Say

Mostly, Ornish gets kudos from the medical community for his highly restricted diet and healthy lifestyle routine. His documented studies showing a reversal of coronary blockage are indeed impressive. Neal Barnard, MD, president of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, says: "His diet is one of the only popular diet plans that is firmly rooted in science. It not only brings weight loss without counting calories, but it also brings good overall health. It reverses heart disease, cuts the risk of cancer, makes diabetes and hypertension more manageable, and sometimes even makes them go away."

The drawback is that the plan requires learning completely new eating habits, which many consider drastic. Barnard, the author of Food for Life and several other books on health, adds, "But after the first week or two, the plan becomes self-rewarding, because the weight loss is virtually automatic. People have better energy and they just want to stick to it."

On the other hand, Robert H. Eckel, MD, chair of the nutrition committee of the American Heart Association and a professor at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, is doubtful. He suggests that only the most committed will stick to Ornish's routine: "Because it is so rigid and doesn't allow a lot of food choices for those used to the Western diet, not many people will stay on it for the long term. Many people get tired of eating food with such a low fat content."

Frank Hu, MD, PhD, assistant professor of medicine at the Harvard School of Public Health, is critical of how severely fat is limited on the diet. "The data from numerous studies show that it is the type of fat, rather than the total amount, which is related to cardiovascular health," he says. "Polyunsaturated and monounsaturated oils actually protect against cardiovascular incidents, but Ornish doesn't distinguish the good fats from the bad fats -- such as trans fats, which come from margarine sticks and cookies and crackers, and animal fats." For example, Hu says, Ornish advocates limiting the consumption of fish and nuts, and Hu adds, "There is strong evidence that the fat in them is protective against coronary heart disease in both epidemiological studies and clinical trials."

Food for Thought

Vegetarians, or those willing to become so for the long term, may be the only dieters who will find success with this plan. The recommendation to eat smaller, more frequent meals requires that dieters change their eating schedules, which could be difficult for some. Other than that, this plan has what it takes to lose weight and keep it off, and receives high marks from nutrition experts.

Parallel Universes

The mind has been dealing with parallel universes for some time. Early man in many parts of the world believed in a dream world that was just as real as the conscious world. Many wonderful things happen there, especially for those who realized how to live in it.

Most of our stories and beliefs come from the world of the imagination, except revelation which discernment and the virtues allow us to come to understand better. Our myths of creation, and how to live the good life come from our understanding of all the realities.

Ed Witten's M-theory says that there are eleven dimensions. The eleventh resolves the other five string theories and also gives us the parallel universes and another spacial dimension that can be called a membrane, which can be as small as a vibrating string of as big as the universe. Perhaps there were a couple membranes as large as the universe that came close to each other that caused a big bang?

Maybe there are dense particles that can prove a supersymmetry to M- theory and that we will soon discover these "sparticles" with the atom smashers?

Holistic Computing by Phil Cutrara
Now Playing: How to make a better world...

The computer has many uses. It can help you with your work, your play and every part of your life. Holistics is a way of getting the most out of life and sharing it with others. When we learn how to better improve ourselve, we become better and are better able to help others make a better world.

There are many ways we can improve. It is probably easiest to start with our body. Everyone can learn how to exercise and to eat properly. Physical fitness is the place to start, because without our health we would not feel well enough to improve our mind or our spirit. When we are healthy, our mind wants to learn and create something better and something new. Our soul wants to deal with the problems of good and evil and learn the truth about war and peace.

When all the many aspects of our life work together for the common good, new dimensions come into view. The transpersonal and the self-transcendent levels come alive with serendipitous events and synergistic results.

There are countless aspects of the human being. A person is not just a body, mind, soul, and spirit; because there are many more dimensions to life. We all need the world to survive, and we also need other human beings to exist. No one can live a life alone. Introversion leads to narcissistic perversions and extreme fanaticism. There is no power in nightmares and terrorists will never rule a free society.

When we learn how to get the most out of our computer, we are on the way that leads to wisdom, creativity, contentment, productivity, and cooperation with every other person in the world, and every other creature.

It is remarkable how much a holistic human being can accomplish in a day! It does not take much planning to enjoy every minute of it. The sun does not have to be shining to talk to someone on the other side of the world. No human being is detached from another more than six degrees of separation. No one is a stranger, if you learn how to communicate effectively. Those who are close minded to what is good, beautiful, or true will never be able to become fulfilled.

The more ways we use our computer, the better we will develop. The science of learning is built upon using all of our senses to become better students of life. A liberal arts educated citizen is one of the most precious resources our nation possesses, because that individual can fit in where ever he or she is needed. You do not need to endlessly hunt for a place to work, if you know how to create your own job. Everyone needs help to do something. All you need to know is what it is and how to lend them a hand.

It should not be hard to find a job or someone to love. It should not be difficult to be healthy, wealthy or wise. Life needs not to be lived in "quiet desperation," for it is fill with hope and promises for a bright future.

The World Wide Web is filled with overflowing generosity. Take a tour of any subject and you will soon proceed to advance knowledge and understanding. Yet, you need to have the strength of discernment to know who are the authorities of the subject matter and the strength to stay away from sites that are a danger to your transformation.

The Internet has many sites that offer public domain multimedia: books, movies, information content databases on every subject, and freeware software of every type. There are also many people that write shareware and many companies that offer demos of their software products that you can download from the net. The search engines will help you find them, and also help you learn what other have to say about them. They will tell you if is worth the effort to even try them out!

Computer Science can be learned on the Internet for free. Some of the better computer clubs have an extensive Information Technology library that is used by its members so well that it is kept current with the latest texts. Although the Internet completely changes just about every five years, if you know how to keep informed about the latest technologies, you will also learn how to understand them, and use them to improve yourself and help create a better world.

HOLISTIC MEDICINE
Now Playing: Principles
1-Optimal health is the primary goal of holistic medical practice. It is the conscious pursuit of the highest level of functioning and balance of the physical, environmental, mental, emotional, social and spiritual aspects of human experience, resulting in a dynamic state of being fully alive. This creates a condition of well-being regardless of the presence or absence of disease.

2-The Healing Power of Love. Holistic health care practitioners strive to meet the patient with grace, kindness, acceptance, and spirit without condition, as love is life’s most powerful healer.

3-Whole person. Holistic health care practitioners view people as the unity of body, mind, spirit and the systems in which they live.

4-Prevention and treatment . Holistic health care practitioners promote health, prevent illness and help raise awareness of dis-ease in our lives rather than merely managing symptoms. A holistic approach relieves symptoms, modifies contributing factors, and enhances the patient’s life system to optimize future well-being.

5-Innate Healing Power. All people have innate powers of healing in their bodies, minds and spirits. Holistic health care practitioners evoke and help patients utilize these powers to affect the healing process.

6-Integration of Healing Systems. Holistic health care practitioners embrace a lifetime of learning about all safe and effective options in diagnosis and treatment. These options come from a variety of traditions, and are selected in order to best meet the unique needs of the patient. The realm of choices may include lifestyle modification and complimentary approaches as well as conventional drugs and surgery.

7-Relationship-centered care. The ideal practitioner-patient relationship is a partnership which encourages patient autonomy, and values the needs and insights of both parties. The quality of this relationship is an essential contributor to the healing process.

8-Individuality. Holistic health care practitioners focus patient care on the unique needs and nature of the person who has an illness rather than the illness that has the person.

9-Teaching by Example. Holistic health care practitioners continually work toward the personal incorporation of the principles of holistic health, which then profoundly influence the quality of the healing relationship.

10-Learning opportunities. All life experiences including birth, joy, suffering and the dying process are profound learning opportunities for both patients and health care practitioners.

Oral Chelation Therapy
Mood:  silly
Now Playing: An Alternative Treatment for the Diseases of Aging
Introduction
Cardiovascular diseases have become increasingly common during this century. Only by major changes in western lifestyles — better diet, less smoking, more exercise — have stroke and heart attack decreased over the past ten years. Nevertheless, at least fifty percent of all Americans will die as a result of cardiovascular disease. Women are experiencing such illnesses even though it used to be believed that estrogen hormones protected women from vascular disorders.

Biomedical research has now uncovered the causes of cardiovascular disease:

1) The increasing consumption of processed food. In particular, refined sugar and grains that have had the high mineral content chaff and germ removed. In addition, the essential oils contained in these grains are now consumed in the form of "hydrogenated vegetable oils," which inhibit the normal processing of fats in the body.

2) The increase in fast food as a major component of the diet at the expense of fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and whole grains.

3) The addition of additives, dyes, pesticides, herbicides, and other poisons directly to our foods and into the food chain — via industrial pollution and "modern" farming practices.

4) The lack of exercise inherent in the industrialized Western lifestyle.

5) The increase in stress factors such as air pollution, polluted waters, crowded living conditions, wide spread distribution of depressing news events and other psychosocial forces.

We are bombarded with multitudinous recommendations regarding what we should eat. I have tried to address this question from the standpoint of how the question is dealt with in the natural world. What do people drink in "primitive" hunter-gatherer cultures? What do animals in the wild drink?

The answer is simple: Water! Nothing more. There are no soda-pop factories or breweries in the rain forests of New Guinea or South America. Yes, people prepare herbal beverages but mainly for specific medicinal purposes.

The fact is our taste for fluids has been distorted by the use of soda pop, caffeinated beverages and alcohol. This fact was brought home hard on a medical doctor named F. Batmanghelidj when he was thrown into jail by the fundamentalist regime that had taken over Iran in 1979.

While in prison where he was deprived of all fluids except water for his own use, and where, as a prison doctor as well, there was a shortage of pharmaceutical medication necessitating his use of water for conditions such as peptic ulcer attacks, he discovered the healing power of water.46

In his book "YOUR BODY'S MANY CRIES FOR WATER", Dr. Batmanghelidj claims that chronic dehydration is a principal cause behind indigestion, hiatus hernia, arthritis, headaches, depression and high blood pressure, among other conditions. Many research studies have borne this idea out. A study presented at the European Society of Cardiology in Vienna in 1998 revealed that in a population of more than 30,000 men and women, the ones who drank more than 5 glasses of water per day had a dramatic reduction in the incidence of coronary heart disease, stroke and diabetes.

We have installed a distillation system for the drinking water at our clinic and during your chelation treatments we will serve you water and encourage you to drink all you can while you are in the office and at home.

Remember that the toxic metals we are chelating leave the body through the kidney system so extra water will hasten the flushing of these poisons out of your body. For your good health please drink at least 6 glasses (12 oz.) of water every day. You will notice a difference if you do this consistently for a number of weeks.

Water consumption is probably the most neglected area of health. Water is the basis of life on this planet and approximately 70% of our body weight consists of water. It is literally the medium in which our bio-molecules live and our tissues and organs cannot be healthy without proper water balance.

We recommend you try to drink a large glass of pure water every time you think you need a cigarette, a cup of coffee, a soda pop or other sweet or alcoholic beverage.

When I say "pure" water, I mean to imply that unless you have a good reverse osmosis filter or distilling apparatus connected to your water supply, you probably don't have pure water. Distilled water is "hungry" water — it will flush out impurities from our body. Clean Artesian or spring water is also fine as long as you can document its purity.

NOTE: The notable exception to this advice occurs in patients who have been given a fluid restriction by their doctor because of severe congestive heart failure. These cases are dealt with individually by Dr. Waters.

[ The scientific method to determine if you are consuming enough water is very simple and involves the use of a Specific Conductance Meter. An inexpensive meter can be obtained and used to test the solids content of your urine. If the meter reads above 12,000 microsiemens — the value of our blood — you need to be drinking more water.]

It is the combination of dietary changes, nutritional supplements, regular exercise, stress reduction, and Oral (Ed.) Chelation Therapy, which leads to improved health. It is important for you to be committed to all aspects of the program to insure maximum probability of success.

What is Arteriosclerosis and How is it Treated?
When we are born our arteries are basically free of obstructions and have a high degree of elasticity. They expand and contract with each pump of the heart; the blood with its life carrying nutrients and oxygen is carried to every cell and every tissue of the body. There is a tremendous amount of chemical activity going on constantly in the cells that line these vessels. If the enzyme systems, which operate in these arterial cell membranes, become blocked by heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, or aluminum, or by deposits of calcium in the membrane, the rate of chemical activity slows down. Fatty materials such as cholesterol begin to bind with the calcium atoms. This is the beginning of what is called a "plaque". This process is known to start in infancy. "Fatty streaks" have been seen in the arteries of infants during autopsies. It progresses insidiously. Autopsies done on young American men killed in the Korean and Viet Nam wars revealed 80 percent of these men, whose average age was about 21, had significant arteriosclerotic occlusive disease. In many cases, there was a 50 to 75 percent blockage of one or more of their coronary arteries. The lack of symptoms, until there is a 75-90% occlusion of a given artery, often makes this a most deadly process with sudden death frequently being the first symptom.

Depending on the location of the occlusion, the result of a total blockage is known as a heart attack, stroke, or arterial occlusion in the leg (see Figure 1). Total occlusions necessitate attempts to reestablish blood flow through by-pass procedures.

Locations of common sites of arterial obstructive disease.
Before total obstructions occur attempts are often made to widen the diameter of arteries or prevent clotting through the use of various drugs. While both drug measures and operations may temporarily improve circulation, they often only postpone the inevitable, total blockage of the artery. Drugs and surgery generally have no effect on the disease process itself.

Studies have shown that the use of a vegetarian diet along with an exercise program can halt the progression of plaque formation in arteries and in some cases actually reverse the obstructions.1

The approach used at Waters Preventive Medical Center includes the dietary — and exercise — oriented approach above in addition to a nutritional supplement program and intravenous infusions of vitamins, minerals and a chelating agent known as E.D.T.A. (Ethylene diamine tetraacetric acid).

What is Chelation Therapy?
The word "Chelation" comes from the Greek word "chele" which means a claw of a crab or lobster and implies a strong, pincer-like grasping. In the case of Chelation Therapy, the grasping is done by a chelating agent and the object grasped is a metal atom. This chelating agent forms a very stable chemical complex with a mineral or metal ion known as a "heterocyclic ring structure." There are many examples of chelates in nature such as magnesium in the chlorophyll molecule in plants, iron in the hemoglobin of blood cells in man and other higher organisms and the incorporation of cobalt in the vitamin B-12 molecule.

There are many "Chelating Agents" in nature such as vitamin C, sulphur-containing amino acids and many enzymes. Unless some of the enzymes contain a firmly bound metal atom they will not be active or have a decrease in their activity. Even the usual drugs used in medical practice in the treatment of disease are often dependent upon Chelation processes for their action.

A new science has emerged which deals with the subject of Chelation and is know as Complexion or Bioinorganic Chemistry.2 The basis of this field is the inorganic chemical principles contained in and well explained by Ligand Field Theory. This theory deals with the mechanisms by which organic chemicals form three-dimensionally stable structures with metal ions through sharing of electrons. The resultant compounds are very stable and will only break apart with difficulty. A review of the science underlying Chelation Therapy may be found in a treatise by Bruce W. Halstead, M.D.3

The principles, which are the basis of Complexion Chemistry or Ligand Field Theory, are among the most fundamental in nature. In view of the array of nature's applications the exploitation of these principles and concepts in the treatment of human disease is not only logical but also predictable.

In short, Chelation is a process whereby the metals are held and positioned by body chemicals so as to facilitate chemical reactions, which are essential to life. Chelation Therapy is the introduction of naturally occurring or synthetic organic chemicals into the human body in order to facilitate chemical reactions, which lead to the discharge of poisonous metals from the body and the rearrangement of essential metals in the body for the promotion of life's chemical reactions.

What is Chelation Therapy Used For?
Chelation Therapy is used as the primary treatment for heavy metal intoxication by lead, cadmium, aluminum, mercury, arsenic, and even iron.8-10 At this time, it is also used to treat occlusive vascular diseases in conjunction with diet, nutritional supplements, and lifestyle changes. Because Chelation Therapy appears to improve circulation and reduce toxic chemical reactions in the body, it has also been used successfully for arthritis, diabetes, high blood pressure, and eye diseases such as macular degeneration.11-18

How Does Chelation Work?
Numerous theories have been erected to explain the obvious benefits of Chelation Therapy. The following is a list of possible mechanisms, all of which have been partially proven by research studies.

1) Heavy metals such as Lead, Mercury, Cadmium, Arsenic, Nickel, and Antimony have been shown to relentlessly accumulate in human tissue over a lifetime. Aluminum has been implicated as a possible factor in the causation of Alzheimer's disease. These poisonous metals disrupt the normal biochemical processes.

They insinuate themselves into the active sites of enzymes thereby altering such enzymes' activities, and they initiate "free radical reactions," which produce noxious chemicals that damage cellular structures such as proteins, cell membranes and DNA. The results at the level of the whole organism are the development of degenerative diseases-arteriosclerosis, arthritis and cancers. The removal of these poison metals with Chelation Therapy is probably a major mechanism by which Chelation normalizes biochemical activity thereby improving circulation and energy.

2) Essential metals such as iron, copper, manganese, and zinc are rearranged in the various body compartments resulting in improved enzyme activity at the cellular level.

3) Calcium deposits are removed from vessels and intracellular membranes leading to increased blood flow and better functioning of the enzyme systems imbedded in those membranes. The result is, again, improved organ function, vitality and energy level.

4) The blood clotting elements known as platelets are made less sticky, reducing clots in the vessels and leading to improved circulation and reduction in the thromboses that occur during heart attacks and strokes.

5) E.D.T.A. binds trace elements like iron, which are known initiators of "free radical reactions". These free radical reactions are thought to be the chemical origin of arteriosclerosis, cancer, and inflammations. In general, they are thought to be the cause of aging and its concomitant degenerative processes. With respect to #3 above, realize that a slight increase in the internal diameter of an occluded vessel results in a large increase in blood flow through that artery.

In fact, doubling the vessel's diameter results in a 16 to 32–fold increase in blood flow. If even a 10% increase in diameter occurs, there is still 1 l/2 to 3 times the blood flow. Therefore, a vessel doesn't need to be completely unclogged in order for the patient to experience a reduction in his symptoms.

A small increase in the diameter of an obstructed artery results in a large increase in blood flow throught that artery.

The positive effects of E.D.T.A. Chelation Therapy are probably dependent both on decreasing the blood vessel occlusion and on the cellular and subcellular level effects of this agent. There are also probably many other unknown mechanisms.

Vascular Cleanse

Contains two essential nutrients necessary for the formation of HDL, the "good" cholesterol, Niacin and Vitamin C. Together with the biomolecular base these provide for cardiovascular health. High Density Lipoproteins, HDL's, are necessary for blood lipid maintenance. Vascular Cleanse not only allows for the increase of HDL but also reduces LDL and triglycerides.

Some individuals may experience a tingling, itching and reddening to their skin after taking a product with Niacin. This is normal, the result of the cleansing of the arterial and venous systems. Niacin dilates the vascular system while oxidizing lipids (fats and cholesterol) in the blood stream, and in the process thermogenesis occurs, indicated by the feeling of heat. This response is transient, lasting only 15-35 minutes generally, and is harmless.

Continue daily use until flushing no longer occurs. This is an indication that the vascular system is cleared. For maintenance, you may want to use Vascular Cleanse, one capsule, 1 to 3 times per week or as desired. Take with meals to reduce flushing.

Daniel Chapter One Product

Vitamin A is extremely important in the protection of the endothelium or lining of the blood vessels, it assists in the absorption of Selenium and stimulates the thymus to produce more antibodies.

Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant and protects against free radical damage. Vitamin C is another powerful antioxidant which stimulates the production of the enzyme lipoprotein lipase which acts a cleanser on the arterial walls.

Vitamin B-1, B-2, Niacin, Pantothenic acid, B-6 and PABA all act together in the prevention of free radical damage by stimulating and supporting antioxidant nutrients.

Vitamin B-12 and Folic Acid improve the health of red blood cells. Choline and DL Methionine have a lipotropic effect which means they help to transport fat through the vascular system and prevent fat from attaching to the walls of the blood vessels.

Selenium is essential to maintain a healthy body and has a number of uses, it is a very powerful antioxidant, has lipotropic factors and helps detoxify some metabolites.

Zinc stimulates the immune system and acts as an antioxidant. L-Cysteine Hydrochloride is required to help remove heavy metals and toxins released as a result of EDTA activity. The Spleen and Thymus concentrates help rejuvenate their source organs.

EDTA helps to remove toxins which have become embedded in the body's tissue. These toxins include: Mercury, Cadium, Nickle, Copper and Lead. It is also thought that EDTA removes excess Calcium from the lining of the blood vessels which is associated with arteriosclerosis or hardening of the arteries.

Co-factors are parts of the formula not described above, but whose function assists and enhances the actions of the nutrients listed above.

Remember also to the eat foods rich in antioxidants, a diet high in unsaturated Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids, and to do your daily exercises and something every day to lower or manage stress levels in your life.

GI Track PH Levels Need to be in Balance
Now Playing: The Vatimin Lady
THE pH FACTOR -
ACID RAIN IN THE BODY
by Lynn Hinderliter CN, LDN

The human body contains up to 60% water overall: the brain is 70% water; the blood, 82% and the lungs almost 90%. We are an inland sea, and a blight can descend on our bodies if the acid /alkaline balance of this "water of life" is not maintained, just as the acid in rain is blighting some of the forests of the world..

All of the cells of our body are washed by the liquid medium of that sea, which allows nutrients to be transported from place to place, and laves away the toxins our cells discharge. When pH is imbalanced, the system breaks down - if the body's pH deviates too far to the acidic or too far to the alkaline side, cells can become poisoned by their own toxic waste and die.

Interestingly, scientists are now determining that the pH of our actual oceans is changing, with a concomitant effect on the health of the denizens of the sea.

Acidity can be a factor in:

irritability, anxiety and depression
excess mucous
lowered immune system function
Dysbiosis
aches and pains, inflammation
premature ageing because of cellular inefficiency

Many chronic disease states accompany an acid body condition : cardiovascular problems such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, arteriosclerosis and stroke; many cancers; diabetes; many autoimmune diseases; osteoporosis, indigestion, bowel imbalances and dysbiosis; much inflammation, such as of the joints and the bladder..

I am not suggesting that acid pH is the only cause, or that correcting it will bring about a miracle cure: but any attempt to balance and bring health to the body needs to address this serious instability if it wishes to succeed.

Water is considered neutral at a ph of 7. Anything under that is increasingly acid, anything over - increasingly alkaline. The human body operates optimally at a pH that varies from 6.8 to 7.5, depending on the time of day: pH tends to peak at 6 o'clock in the evening, and at noon, with the lowest point coming at 6 o'clock in the morning. These readings represent homeostasis, or balance. When the pH is operating within these normal parameters, cells can take up nutrients as and when needed, depending only on availability, and can discharge wastes efficiently.

Calcium in particular is dependent on the correct pH for absorption. In addition, when the body is acidic, it will withdraw calcium from the bones in an attempt to provide the alkalinizing minerals necessary to correct balance.

Here is an excellent definition from Health Freedom Resources :

The cells of the body in health are alkaline, but in disease states the cell pH is below 7.0. The more acid the cells become, the sicker we are and feel. The cells won't die until their pH gets to about 3.5. Our bodies produce acid as a by-product of normal metabolism. This is the result of our bodies burning or using alkaline to remain alive. Since our bodies do not manufacture alkaline, we must supply the alkaline from an outside source to keep us from becoming acid and dying.

Food is the means of replenishing the alkaline to the body. The main determining factor of alkaline is the organic minerals. One can equate organic minerals with alkaline for better understanding. Foods are of two types, acid or alkaline. This refers to the ash value of a food. (Meaning the type of residue that remains after the food is digested and processed). Is it acid, or is it alkaline? If there is an acid residue (inorganic acids), the body must neutralize this acid to keep the blood from getting acid. The acid is neutralized with alkaline.

Ideally there is adequate alkaline in the diet to do this. However, if there is not, the body must extract alkaline from its cells to neutralize the acid. This, of course, causes the cells to become acid, and thus diseased. Because our bodies are an alkaline entity, in order to maintain health, the majority of our diet must consist of alkaline ash foods.

We can remain in health by consuming a diet that is 70-80% alkaline and 20-30% acid. The more alkaline the better. If we become too alkaline by eating a majority of alkaline foods, we will lose our appetite and automatically want to fast, during which time the normal acid metabolic by-products will return the body's pH back to normal. It is interesting to note that some foods which qualify as a real food have an acid ash reaction. This is probably nature's way of keeping a balance so that the real food consumer does not become too alkaline. Also note that the acid content of these acid ash real foods is very low and they still contain valuable nutrients which can be utilized by the body.

You can buy strips to measure pH at some health food stores. You can also order them directly from us. You can measure either urinary or saliva pH. Urinary pH should fall around 6.5, lower is acidic; salivary pH should be measured at least 2 hours away from a meal, and is healthy at 7.4, acidic below that.

Diet determines whether we tend towards the acid or alkaline and the average U.S. diet might almost be designed to cause us to err!

Proteins (pork, beef, chicken, ham, turkey etc.)

grains

coffee and tea

eggs

beer, wine and pops

most breads, spaghettis and pastas

refined rice

chocolate

all promote an acid state in our body fluids.

Dairy foods, potatoes and onions are mostly neutral, and

fruits

vegetables

beans and soy are on the alkaline side.

Occasionally I am contacted by confused clients who have found conflicting information from different experts concerning the pH of a food: I received this EXCELLENT clarification from another of my contacts, who is a long-time student of this health element:

"There is a lot of double talk by so-called experts. In some cases, the references are just the opposite of what they should be - I found that the reason apparently is that some experts are referring to the acid/alkalinity of food BEFORE these foods are eaten. There is a chemical change in the body which converts the (e.g.) acidity to alkalinity AFTER ingestion of the food. This should take out a lot of confusion about the chemical formation of the different foods.

There are some "superfoods" that are natural buffers that I use and recommend frequently. A natural buffer is a substance that counteracts the acid state of the body, and chief among them are concentrated green foods like

barley grass

spirulina

Chlorella

and some wonderful combinations of dried vegetables, sea vegetables and cereal grasses.

As a side note, I often have people tell me that their arthritis has been helped by taking a green food, and this is part of the reason why: people with arthritis are almost without exception highly acidic, which is a pro-inflammatory state. All concentrated green foods are helpful in alkalinizing pH.

Chronic acidosis also affects the function of the liver, causing congestion: when the liver is not functioning properly, inflammation can result: beneficially affecting this condition will also be of benefit in arthritis.

The other buffers I use and recommend most frequently because they are healthful in many other ways also, are

Brewers Yeast ( a natural source of B vitamins, selenium and chromium, among other things)

powdered Lecithin (a concentrate of the Phosphatides in soy)

Bee Pollen

Kelp.

Vitamin C (as Ascorbate for blood type O, as ascorbic acid for others) is an option that can have other benefits for those whose faulty pH accompanies a severe disease state where low immunity is a factor. Increase the amount of Vitamin C gradually until you have determined what your bowel tolerance is, and when that is established, I recommend using half that amount in the morning and half last thing at night to help regulate the body's acid balance.

I recommend a product by Vaxa called pH Balance.

Stress almost immediately causes acidic conditions in the body. For more about the effect of stress on our health, read my article on Stress and the Adrenal Glands.

In my article on digestion, you will find information about Hydrochloric acid and digestive health. Since stomach acid is a significant factor in maintaining pH balance, and is affected by stress, you will find that interesting too.

I find it vexing that some Doctors are still recommending Tums as a source of Calcium for their patients: it is a truly ironic recommendation, since Tums is designed to suppress stomach acid, and calcium is very poorly absorbed unless sufficient stomach acid is present. Sufficient HCL in the stomach, and a proper acid environment there, are also essential for keeping the body in proper pH balance. Lack of acid in the stomach often leads top too much acid in the body, which in turn leads to the withdrawal of minerals from the bones to correct and neutralize the problem.

At the moment there are no studies that support the importance of pH balance to health, and there are even some respected nutritional authorities that do not agree - Dr. Andrew Weil among them, who comments negatively here. However, in another place he emphasizes the importance of keeping the urine alkaline for urinary tract infections, and I wonder whether perhaps there is some confusion between blood pH ( which is regulated by the body) and urinary and salivary pH, which are at the mercy of the diet. If the pH of the mouth affects caries, and the pH of the bladder affects infections - then I submit that all places in between are also affected by an imbalance.
